It’s important to have toys around that just let children explore wherever their imagination takes them.
Sometimes kids need a “starting place” like a book or a familiar character . Sometimes they do better with just some creativity tools.
I can learn a lot about a child in terms of their processing, their thought patterns, and their preferences just by watching them create whatever they like. Again, the heart of it is to get to know a patient who may not yet have learned a good emotional vocabulary.
And secretly? Lots of adults like the creativity tools as well!
A good toolkit also needs to keep tools around for kids of every ability, and so there are variations that I’ve learned are great to keep on hand. Thinking on it, each of these bins is likely its own post, so more to come later.
