Telemedicine appointments have been on the rise for several years, with the increased ease of setting up video conferencing with patients in a patient-privacy compliant way.
However, the need for strict COVID quarantine protocols during 2020 made telemedicine and telepsychiatry move to the forefront quickly.
While some clinics offer telephone only appointments, most psychiatric clinics these days would prefer a video feed as well. While the physical exam is more limited, at least key maneuvers can be attempted.
Psychotherapy, medication management, and mixed modality appointments all can be offered via telepsychiatry. However, some clinics may want to see you in person before transitioning some or all appointments to telemedicine. If your physician is concerned, you may also have to make a separate appointment in-person for vitals or lab work.
When scheduling a telepsychiatry appointment, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind:
Try to find a quiet and private place to have your appointment, free from distractions
Remember that while you may not be commuting, you may need some time to yourself both before and after the appointment
Your psychiatrist may request that for future appointments you are seen in person
